Dad's Army Movie: First Look At Toby Jones And Cast On Set

Don’t panic! It’s only the new cast of the ‘Dad’s Army’ remake shooting scenes on set in the idyllic Yorkshire countryside.

Sporting the trademark round glasses, lead Toby Jones looked the spit of Arthur Lowe’s Captain Mainwaring, complete with foliage stuffed into his helmet.

Tom Courtenay was also successfully channeling the great Clive Dunne as Corporal Jones, though the moustache could do with a little wax.

In fact, all the cast very much looked the part; Michael Gambon as the drippy Godfrey, Daniel Mays as the company’s in-house spiv Walker, and ‘The Inbetweeners’ as the nice-but-dim Private Pike.

Also seen was Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays a journalist sent to Walmington-On-Sea to write about the unit.

The official synopsis has been unveiled too:

“Their new mission to patrol the Dover army base is a great chance to revive spirits and reputation, that is until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits, putting the local women on red alert.

“MI5 then discover a radio signal which was sent direct to Berlin from Walmington-on-Sea.

"There’s a spy on the loose, the outcome of the war is suddenly at stake, and it falls to our unlikely heroes to stand up and be counted.”

The look and feel of the classic BBC series from which the movie’s being adapted appears – from these shots at least – to be spot on.

Not spotted on the Bridlington set were Bill Nighy in John Le Mesurier’s role of Sergeant Wilson, Mainwaring’s second in command, and Bill Paterson as the barking mad Scotsman Fraser.

There has been not a little consternation about remaking the classic series, originally penned by TV comedy legends David Croft and Jimmy Perry.

However, with such a genuinely dazzling cast on board, one would hope that the Home Guard is almost certainly in safe hands.

Also starring are Annette Crosbie, Alison Steadman and Mark Gatiss… as if the cast couldn’t get any more solidly British.

The original series ran from 1968 to 1977, and has been repeated countless times ever since, making it one of the best-loved British comedy series of all time.
