The ‘Last Tango In Halifax’ star was cast as an older woman having a relationship with a much younger man in the 2003 movie.

But the anxiety of appearing naked for the role took its toll.

She told Kirsty Young on Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’: “The night before I had a lot of drink on my own in the flat and I stripped and I stood in front of a mirror and thought, ‘Tomorrow I’m going to have to show this’.

“And I started to cry and I thought, ‘Oh my good God, I can’t do this’.

“I rang my son and I was weeping and he said, ‘Look Mum, it’s a great part, if you’re inhibited it’s not going to work so just go for it’.

“I sort of managed to pull myself together but it was scary.”

In the movie, directed by Roger Michell and written by Hanif Kureishi, Reid played the suddenly bereaved May, who, fearing her own life is also over, embarks on a torrid affair with Darren (Craig), a handyman who is renovating her son’s house and who is also her daughter’s lover.

Despite her concerns, Reid won the London Critics Circle award for her performance and was nominated for a Bafta, a European Film Award and at the British Independent Film Awards.

Most recently, she’s been seen in ‘Last Tango In Halifax’ on the BBC, in which she stars opposite Derek Jacobi, Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker.
