David Fincher Was Approached For Star Wars VII?

Although J.J. Abrams has since taken the helm of ‘Star Wars VII’, it looks as though David Fincher may have been in talks for the coveted director’s role.

In an interview with Total Film, the 52-year-old director revealed that spoke to Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy about helming the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ sequel.

“I talked to Kathy about it,” he said. “But I think that it’s a different thing from… I don’t know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like.” Clearly unsure about the recent merger between Disney and Lucasfilm, I can’t help thinking that may have been reason enough to pass on the gig.

"It’s tricky," he adds. "My favourite is ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. If I said, ‘I want to do something more like that,’ then I’m sure the people paying for it would be like, ‘No! You can’t do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!’”

I have to admit, I’m with Fincher on his choice of favourite ‘Star Wars’ film… but then, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is always a popular choice. And the one with all the creatures? We only assume he means those pesky Ewoks… and with hints that ‘Star Wars VII’ might just return to Endor, perhaps Fincher was wise to stay away.

"I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters’ folly, the ultimate folly of man… I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it’s kind of gone by ‘Return Of The Jedi’."

It’s certainly an interesting take on the ‘Star Wars’ saga… and one that has been much discussed since the release of the first movie. After all, R2-D2 and C-3PO remain the only characters present for the entire original and prequel trilogies.

Will this continue into the upcoming sequel trilogy? I get the feeling we can count on that. But how would Fincher’s ‘Star Wars VII’ compare to J.J. Abrams’ movie? That’s another question entirely…
