The Advertising Standards Authority has now received over 100 complaints, after a clip from ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was shown during a World Cup ad break.

The clip, played out on Wednesday night, showed the ape Koba, played by Toby Kebbell, approach two armed men drinking whiskey before seeming to befriend them.

Though the ad was shown after the 10pm watershed, some parents, who were among the 9.7 million people who watched the match, were angry because they had let younger children stay up to watch the World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Holland.

Many movie fans lauded the dramatic snippet, but others took to Twitter to air their anger.

One said: “So @ITV it’s ok to show 18rated graphic violence in ads during World Cup coverage? @ASA_UK My child can’t unsee that! #planetoftheapes.”

Another added: “@Beckenham @ASA_UK @IABUK @ITV it’s hard enough keeping that sort of thing from my kids as it is, quite shocked there wasn’t even a warning.”

Since the clip played, complaints have mounted, with a spokesperson from the ASA saying: “Complainants are concerned that the ad shows an ape grabbing a gun and shooting a man with it, during the broadcast of the World Cup semi-finals, which children would have been watching.

“We’re currently loading these complaints, we’ll access them before making a decision as to whether we will investigate or not.”

The movie hits UK cinemas on July 17.
