Deadpool Confirmed For R Rated Cinema Release

Fans had been speculating over how faithful the upcoming ‘Deadpool’ adaptation would be, and now we’ve got our answer after Ryan Reynolds himself revealed it was to be Rated R.

This news means that here in the UK we should get an 18 certificate (with R restricting anyone under 17 in the US seeing it without being accompanied by an adult) when it hits cinemas early next year.

The news must come as a huge relief to those who thought their foul-mouthed hero and messed up, hilarious world he inhabits would be toned down, but after speaking with Mario Lopez in an on-set chat for JoBlo, it seems we’re about to get all the adult content fans have been yearning for.

However, initially Reynolds threw everyone off the scent by tweeting that the film would in fact be a PG-13, much to the shock (and short-lived outrage) of his followers.

But this was all an April Fool’s prank, with the end of the brief interview including the star confirming, “Deadpool will of course be rated R.” This was after the comic book weirdo proceeds to whack the presenter over the head with a piece of lighting equipment before uttering, “**** you, Slater. April Fools!”

What’s more, the Deadpool character we see behind Lopez — seemingly in two places at once — is indeed Reynolds himself after staging the whole ‘interview’ for the purposes of the big reveal.

Marvel are perhaps taking a risk filling ‘Deadpool’ with strong adult content, considering a chunk of their global audience are below the age of 18. But at the same time the prospect of a faithful adaptation for mature fans is exciting and, in truth, are getting exactly what they want.

In truth it’d be a disservice to the character if Marvel were to edit it all down to PG level, because the crass, juvenile nature (that includes strong violence, sexual content and dark humour) is what makes the Deadpool persona so appealing in the first place.

So not only have we had the film rating revealed, but it’s the first time we’ve properly seen Reynolds suited and ‘in action’ as the Marvel character (even if it is to brutally kill Mario Lopez).

‘Deadpool’ is out in the UK on 12 February, 2016.
