Deadpool Movie Will Help Set Up Massive Multi-Film Story

The Deadpool movie recently confirmed for release in 2016 will help set up a “massive story” for 20th Century Fox’s superhero universe.

‘X-Men’ writer and producer Simon Kinberg recently confirmed that ‘Deadpool’ will take place in the same film world as that of the mutant superheroes, and also hinted that next year’s ‘The Fantastic Four’ reboot might as well.

In an interview with Cinema Blend over the weekend, Kinberg elaborated slightly on this.

Asked if there’s a grand idea behind films like ‘Deadpool’ and other ‘X-Men’ spin-offs fitting into the larger timeline, he said: “They do all feed into one another in the sense of wanting to tell this sort of massive story that can take place over multiple movies.”

What this seemingly confirms is that there are bigger plans for Fox’s superhero universe that goes beyond 2016’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, which will round off the ‘X-Men’ prequel trilogy started with 2011’s ‘First Class’ and continued with this year’s ‘Days of Future Past’.

“We are aware as we are plotting out ‘Apocalypse’ and the other ‘X-Men’ movies – both potential sequels in the future and standalone movies – and trying to build them all together so that there is a singularity of vision,” continued Kinberg. “And obviously a timeline that makes sense as well, because these movies all, well not all, but many of them take place in different time periods, so that all those things will link up and make sense for an audience.”

Right now Fox’s slate includes ‘The Fantastic Four’ (August 7, 2015), ‘Deadpool’ (February 12, 2016), ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ (May 19, 2016),  a third Wolverine spin-off (March 2, 2017) and a sequel to ‘The Fantastic Four’ (July 14, 2017).

There have also been rumours of other spin-offs for Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and Channing Tatum’s Gambit – both of whom will feature in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.

‘Apocalypse’ will feature the title character as its villain. He is an ancient, all-powerful mutant whose name handily surmises his plans for humanity.

Where they go from there is anyone’s guess, but personally I hope it focuses on Dr Doom, a character that hasn’t yet been done justice on the big screen. All eyes on Toby Kebbell then, who plays Doom in next year’s Fantastic Four movie.
