Disney Announces Zootopia Release Date

It feels like there’s a new Disney film coming out or being announced every week and, while not literally true, the release schedule for the Mouse House is jammed over the coming years, with ‘Zootopia’ now due in 2016.

While the film, directed by ‘Tangled’s’ Byron Howard, has already been unveiled, this is the first time a release date has been confirmed. With no UK date to speak of, Disney have penned a 4 March, 2016 release, which will do battle with Tim Burton’s ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’.

"Our main characters are smooth Fox Nick Wilde and cop rabbit Lt. Judy Hops. Usually in animal movies, people just make them all human and give them human abilities,” says Howard.

The helmer also revealed a little about the way they wanted to portray the relationships between animals and humans;

“We wanted to bring the animal abilities into the movie. In the same way we pushed human animation in ‘Tangled’, we want to show an animal movie the way no-one has seen before. Animals in our world are beautiful and amazing and we wanted to capture that and tie it to what we are as humans.”

With ‘Big Hero 6' having already blown US audiences away, and the recent announcement that 'Moana' will be hitting cinemas on 23 November, 2016, Disney Animation Studios seem to be at the top of their game.

Despite being first released over a year ago, their 2013 animated hit ‘Frozen’ is still set to be a popular choice this Christmas, with the likelihood of a sequel — it did make over $1.2 billion, after all — meaning the talented team are set to be a busy bunch, regardless of the studio not actually releasing an animated movie in 2015. That said, there is the small matter of a double whammy from Pixar in the shape of ‘Inside Out’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur’ to look forward to next year…
