Disney Movies Surpass $4 Billion Mark In 2014

Disney films have already made over $4 billion at the worldwide box office this year, thanks to successes such as ‘Frozen’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Maleficent’.

It’s only the second time in studio history that Disney have achieved such a feat, having surpassed the same figure in 2013, but didn’t manage to do that until 25 November, so is already two weeks ahead of its target.

The milestone was reached after its latest release, superhero animation ‘Big Hero 6’, hit the $100 million figure.

Disney proudly revealed the biggest contributors to their success in 2014 were ‘Guardians of the Galaxy, which made $770 million; ‘Frozen’s’ $733 million from a total of $1.3 billion (as it was released in late 2013); ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s $715 million; and surprise hit ‘Maleficent’s’ takings of $758 million.

And this is all without the release of a Pixar animation this year. Granted, 2013 saw ‘Monsters University’ walk away with a respectable $744 million, yet both ‘Inside Out’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur’ were pushed back until 2015, with ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ also hitting cinemas over the summer.

Therefore, there’s every chance Disney will reach the same dizzy heights this time next year, with the aforementioned three likely to make well over $2 billion alone. And that’s not all; the release of ‘Into The Woods’ (this December), as well as ‘Tomorrowland’ (next May) could see another hugely profitable year for the studio in 2015.
