Disney Win Second Oscar In A Row For First Time Ever

At last night’s 87th Oscars, it was Disney who was the big winner in the Best Animated Feature category whereby their latest, ‘Big Hero 6’, walked away with the award.

With numerous accolades under its belt over the decades, it’s perhaps a surprise that Disney have never won back-to-back Oscars, but thisyear the studio managed just that after fending off competition from the likes of ‘Howto Train Your Dragon 2’ and Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Tale of Princess Kaguya’.

Disney were obvious winners in 2014 when ‘Frozen’ stormed to victory in the animation section, and was always the favourite to do so.

However, this year’s win for ‘Big Hero 6’ was by no means assured, with ‘HTTYD2’ proving popular, and the currently unreleased (in the UK, at least) ‘Song of the Sea’ a strong outsider. In fact, all the competition in 2015 was fierce, with no clear favourite emerging among fans and critics.

The big shock in the Best Animated Feature category was still the omission of ‘The LEGO Movie’, for some unknown reason. Upon the shortlist reveal, there was a huge Twitter backlash that couldn’t grasp why the Lord and Miller movie had failed to even garner a nomination. Indeed, had it been in there, we might be discussing a different winner, but as it stands Disney have done it a second year in a row and, significantly, for the first time in their history.

Is this a turning point for Disney animation? Will Pixar retain the animation crown in 2016? Regardless of any playful rivalry, it’s clear that Disney are right back at the top where they belong.
