It’s been revealed that Stephany Folsom, best known for her Black List script  ‘1969: A Space Odyssey or How Kubrick Learned to Stop Worrying and Land on the Moon’, will write Disney’s ‘The Princess of North Sudan’.

Not only has The Hollywood Reporter confirmed her involvement, but the scribe herself tweeted the news and also had some reassurances for the controversies over the plot.

‘The Princess of North Sudan’ is based on a true story that happened in June 2014, where an American man set out to make his daughter’s question of whether she’ll ever be a real princess come true by finding a disputed territory – in this case Bir Tawil, situated between Egypt and Sudan – flying there, planting a flag and naming it the Kingdom of North Sudan and claiming it for his family to live.

There has been some outcry over the nature of the tale that sees a white Western family purchase land in Sudan to make their daughter a princess. However, Folsom has insisted that the script will be written in good taste and will be a drama centering on the relationship between father and daughter.

So long as Disney do attempt to tastefully focus on the family relationship, then it will hopefully not upset too many people.

A white American family buying lands in a North African country to declare themselves royalty is likely to offend some, so it’ll be interesting to see how the screenplay turns out and, importantly, how the film is portrayed on film.
