Disney’s Moana: First Look Art Work Is Revealed

Disney has shown off some concept art and shared details on its upcoming animated tale ‘Moana’.

It’s been revealed over at the Oh My Disney blog that the film will now be released in late 2016, and not the originally penned 2018 calendar year that did the rounds when the project was unveiled.

'Moana' will be directed by Ron Clements and Jon Musker and the first official image of the production, albeit concept art, is gorgeous. It reminds me of the cell-shaded antics of 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker', with the style of the movie said to be a mixture of hand drawn skill and GC animation.

Regarding the plot of the film, Musker said: “Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself,” the director shared. “She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.”

Disney seems to enjoy using this style of hand drawn and computer animation, with their 2013 short film ‘Paperman’ and last year’s ‘Get A Horse!’, utilising the technology to great effect (the former won an Oscar for Best Short Animated Film, with the latter nominated, only losing to ‘Mr Hublot’).

Its latest short film, ‘Feast’, will also implement this kind of visual exploration, and will accompany upcoming feature ‘Big Hero 6’.

'Moana' looks set to be a thrilling adventure, especially from Clements and Musker — the minds that brought us 'Aladdin', 'The Little Mermaid', and 'The Princess and the Frog'.
