"No! Sho! Blo!" – the fearsome Judoon will make a reappearance in Doctor Who when the sci-fi series returns.

More than 12 years after they made their debut in 2007 episode 'Smith and Jones', the rhino-like aliens are back to face off against Jodie Whittaker's Doctor and her friends in series 12.

These ruthless enforcers are on a deadly mission: but what for? And why has it brought them to present-day Gloucester?

The Judoon's big comeback episode will also feature BAFTA-nominated actor Neil Stuke (Silk, Doctor Foster), though details of his character are yet to be revealed.

Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall said: "The Judoon are storming back into Doctor Who in full force, and the streets of Gloucester aren't safe. If anyone has anything to hide, confess now. The Judoon are taking no prisoners, and will stop at nothing to fulfil their mission!

"The whole team on Doctor Who are delighted and scared in equal measure to welcome them back: one of many treats we've got in store for viewers next series.

"And we're over the moon (with Judoon), to be welcoming the wondrous Neil Stuke as guest star. We can't wait to show you what happens when his path crosses with the Thirteenth Doctor."

Chibnall had previously hinted at the reintroduction of more classic Doctor Who villains, following the reappearance of the Daleks in January's New Year's Day special 'Resolution'.

Doctor Who's next series – which will see Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill reprise their roles of Graham, Ryan and Yaz – is filming now, for broadcast on BBC One in 2020.
