Don't Expect To See Kang The Conqueror In Marvel's Cinematic Universe

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows in size and scope, fans are always left wondering where the studio will go next and who will be the next costumed character to be introduced. One major Marvel villain yet to be portrayed is Kang The Conqueror, but apparently he won’t be turning up any time soon.

The news comes from about as trustworthy a source as you can imagine: the writer and director of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ James Gunn, who answered a fan question on Facebook.

The fan was asking about 2017’s 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ and who might show up: “Mr Gunn, can you tell me if you would consider using the Shi'ar Empire in 'Guardians 2’ or are they owned by Fox? Or Kang the Conqueror? Or is he owned by Fox too?”

In response Gunn said that the rights to Kang and the Shi'ar are both in possession of 20th Century Fox as part of the deals for them to make movies based on the 'X-Men’ and 'Fantastic Four’. He also adds that “All decisions about who is in 'GotG2’ were made a long time ago.”

Now we’ve laid all that out, let’s actually explain exactly who on Earth  Kang The Conqueror actually is. He’s not exactly a household name after all.

Kang The Conqueror is a human born in the 40th Century with the birth name Nathaniel Richards. He’s a descendant of the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, who as well as a genius intellect also has the ability to time travel.

Due to his combat training from the future (so quite advanced then) he has battle armour with holographic and force field capabilities. He also collects advanced weaponry on his time-travels.

He has had numerous run-ins with the Avengers, which is why there has been some debate over who owns the rights to put him on the big screen. Gunn  has now answered that question.

Kang was voted the 65th best comic book villain of all time in an IGN poll, which may not sound too impressive but consider just how many comic villains there have been (thousands?) and the fact the list mixes together both Marvel and DC Comics characters. Being in the top 100 at all means their worthy of the big screen.

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ will be released on 28 April 2017.
