Downton Abbey: The Movie In The Offing?

Following news that ‘Downton Abbey’ is drawing to a close after its sixth series, producers of the show have said that it might not be the final curtain for the ITV costume drama.

Exec producer Gareth Neame has revealed that a movie is now being considered, and writer Julian Fellowes is up for it too.

“I can confirm that there have been rumours that there might be a Downton movie,” Neame said.

“Our position on that is that [Julian Fellowes and I] would be very interested. It is definitely something that we’re contemplating.

“It would be great fun to do. I think it would be a wonderful extension of everything people love about the TV show.

“But I can’t confirm that it’s definitely going to happen. It would take a lot of planning and thinking about. We shall see.”

With a viewership of around 150 million around the world, and a massive following in hugely important emerging movie markets like China, it’s unlikely a major studio won’t be biting the showmakers’ hands off for a chance to bring the Crawley family’s tribulations to the big screen.

It was announced yesterday that the show, which is broadcast in over 220 territories, would end after its sixth series.

Writer Julian Fellowes said: “The Downton journey has been amazing for everyone aboard. People ask if we knew what was going to happen when we started to make the first series and the answer is that, of course we had no idea.

“Exactly why the series had such an impact and reached so many people around the world, all nationalities, all ages, all types, I cannot begin to explain. But I do know how grateful we are to have been allowed this unique experience.

“I suspect the show will always be a principal marker in most of our careers as we set out from here, and if so, I consider that a blessing and a compliment.”

Over its run, it has won three Golden Globes and 11 Emmys.
