There were no car crash speeches at this year’s Golden Globes unfortunately. Most of them were perfectly lovely, and some even a bit touching. But which were the best?
The Winner: Eddie Redmayne (Best Actor, Drama for ‘The Theory Of Everything’)
We have to lead with homegrown star Eddie Redmayne, who turned his speech into an incredible high-class apology to his new wife for ending their honeymoon early.

He said: “Hannah, my wife of a couple of weeks ago, we had to cut our honeymoon short to come to Los Angeles. I promised the sunshine, it wasn’t so great today but I thank you and the HFPA for giving me and us a night at the end of our honey moon that we’ll remember. Thank you!”

Billy Bob Thornton (Best Actor in a TV Movie or Mini-series for ‘Fargo’)
Short but sweet as you’d expect from the famously taciturn Thornton. He said: “These days, you get in a lot of trouble no matter what you say. Do you know what I mean? You can say anything in the world and get in trouble. I know this for a fact. So I’m just going to say thank you.” Fair enough.
Kevin Spacey (Best Actor, TV Drama for ‘House of Cards’)
The highlight was Spacey dropping a well-placed f-bomb. “This is the eighth time I’ve been nominated… I can’t f***ing believe I’ve won!” Cue stunned laughter from the crowd.

Jeffrey Tambor (Best Actor in a TV Series, Comedy or Musical for ‘Transparent’)
Genuinely inspiring stuff from Tambor, who won his award for playing a transgender man in hit Amazon show ‘Transparent’. Dedicating his award to the transgender community, he said: “Thank you for your courage, thank you for the inspiration, thank you for your patience, and thank you for letting us be part of the change.”
Michael Keaton (Best Actor, Musical or Comedy for ‘Birdman’)
We had something in our eye during Keaton’s speech, when he welled up and thanked his son: ”My best friend is kind, intelligent, funny, talented, considerate, thoughtful. Did I say kind? He also — he also happens to be my son, Sean.”

George Clooney (Cecil B. DeMille Award)
Clooney finished off a typically humourous speech with ‘Je Suis Charlie’ – in tribute to the victims of the French terror attack. Nice work, sir.
J.K. Simmons (Best Supporting Actor for ‘Whiplash’)
Simmons told the crowd to “shut up” because he only had 45 seconds, paid tribute to co-star Miles Teller for inspiring him “every day to want to scream at him and hit him in the face” and finished by thanking his wife for their “adorable, above-average children.”
