Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards Says Film About Him Is '90 Percent Made Up'

Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards has said that the film being made about his life is 90 percent made up.

The veteran British ski-jumper is the subject of a biopic, starring 'Kingsman’ actor Taron Egerton playing him, alongside Hugh Jackman.

Jackman plays a character called Bronson Peary, according to reports, who has been modelled on Chuck Berghorn, the ski jump coach who lent Edwards his equipment and prepared him for competition in the Calgary Olympics in 1988.

But Edwards has said that he’s been told not to expect too much in the way of factual accuracy.

“I’ve been warned only 10 to 15% of it is based on my life,” he told the BBC.

“I’ve not really seen the script so I don’t know what they’ve picked out of the things that happened in my life and what is made up.

“There’s always a certain amount of it [poetic licence] but I’m kind of anxious - what exactly have they put in about my life and how have they portrayed me.”

Dexter Fletcher is helming the movie, called 'Eddie the Eagle’, with Matthew Vaughn, director of 'Kingsman’, 'Kick-Ass’ and 'X-Men: First Class’ producing.

Joining Egerton and Jackman on the bill is Christopher Walken.

Edwards was a talented downhill skier before switching to ski jumping because it was a cheaper sport to pursue.

While he was seen as a figure of fun during the Olympics by the British press - and with the powers that be in skiing seeing him as damaging to the sport - he was lauded by his fellow athletes who had spent many years training for the same event, while Edwards had achieved as much in several months.

The movie is due for release in April, 2016.
