Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno Coming To Cinemas At Last

Long-delayed jungle cannibal horror ‘The Green Inferno,’ the fourth directorial effort from filmmaker Eli Roth, is at last bound for the big screen.

The ‘Cabin Fever’ and ‘Hostel’ director’s comeback movie - his first time calling the shots since 2007′s ‘Hostel Part II’ - was completed almost two years ago, and premiered in July 2013 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It subsequently screened at a number of festivals worldwide, including Britain’s FrightFest in August 2014 - yet that same month, the film was abruptly pulled from its original September 2014 release date. Little explanation was given at the time, but reportedly financial difficulties for production company Worldview Entertainment were the root of the problem.

However, there has at last been a change in the wind as Roth took to Facebook to inform followers that ‘The Green Inferno’ is finally getting released - and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s down to today’s leading horror production house/distributor Blumhouse Productions.

In a video, Roth and Jason Blum (producer behind a slew of horror hits including the ‘Paranormal Activity’ and 'Insidious’ franchises) confirmed ‘The Green Inferno’ will hit cinemas in the US on 25th September. Fangoria have subsequently expanded on this, revealing that Universal and High Top Releasing will co-distribute the film, which will simultaneously open in 1,000 screens across America and on VOD at the same time.

Roth posted the brief clip with a nod of appreciation to fans: “Thank you everyone for your unending support, it helped save this movie!!”

Given Roth’s history with extreme gore, one might have assumed the risky subject matter of cannibalism might have been a factor in keeping ‘The Green Inferno’ from screens. However, the film has had no difficulty from either US classifiers the MPAA or the UK’s BBFC, having been passed uncut on both sides of the Atlantic with an R and an 18 respectively.

Roth’s next movie, psychosexual shocker ‘Knock Knock’ starring Keanu Reeves, is already scheduled to hit UK cinemas on 26 June. No word yet on when ‘The Green Inferno’ will spread to our shores.
