Emily Blunt Says She Has Not Been Officially Offered Captain Marvel Role

Despite being hotly tipped for the title role in ‘Captain Marvel,’ Emily Blunt insists she has not been offered the part in what will be Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie.

Speaking to Vulture in promotion of her latest role in musical ‘Into The Woods,’ the British actress was asked about an on-set incident in which she was reported to have saved Meryl Streep’s life; Blunt insists this has “been completely blown out of proportion. I kind of caught her arm when she was falling off a table, but it’s not as big of a deal as everyone’s made it out to be.

At the suggestion that this could be evidence of superheroic potential that might land her ‘Captain Marvel,’ Blunt reportedly laughed, “Oh! No one’s offered me that officially, so it’s … [laughs] very unofficial. I think it’s fan-casting, which is always very nice. But nothing official has been offered, for sure. If I get it, thank Meryl for it!”

Quizzed about her past near-casting with Marvel in the roles of Black Widow in ‘Iron Man 2’ (subsequently played by Scarlett Johansson) and Peggy Carter in ‘Captain America: the First Avenger’ (which went to Hayley Atwell), Blunt was diplomatic.

"It was never the right time, really, and it just didn’t work out scheduling-wise with those two [roles]. It’s always a difficult thing to talk about, because it’s not fair to the actresses who ended up playing them, you know? It just wasn’t the right time.”

Still, the fact that Blunt has come so close to taking on major Marvel roles in the past does give pause for thought that she might have her foot in the door for this one.

Earlier rumours have linked Katee Sackhoff to the role of Captain Marvel, and Natalie Dormer is also a name that comes up a lot in fan-casting. There also remains speculation that Captain Marvel - or at least her human alter-ego, US Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, prior to being imbued with cosmic powers - may well make her debut appearance in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’

With or without Carol Danvers, the ‘Avengers’ sequel will hit UK cinemas on 24 April 2015, whilst the ‘Captain Marvel’ movie is scheduled for July 2018.
