Enola Holmes 2: Release date, cast, plot and everything else you need to know

To the delight of fans everywhere, Enola Holmes will soon be back on our screens.

The film, which will see Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill reprise their roles as the inquisitorial siblings, was officially announced in May, now has a listing on Netflix and is likely to be released in the colder months this year.

But the months’ long wait isn’t going to stop us from starting to get excited. The first film, which had Brown producing as well as starring, was the most watched film on Netflix in America over its first five days, and garnered, according to Business Insider, as many as 77 million views on the streaming giant.

The films are based on the books series of the same name by Nancy Springer and follow Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister Enola as she gets up to detective-themed adventures.

So, if you’re like us and you’re already pumped for part two, here is everything there is to know about the forthcoming film.

What’s the release date?

Audiences haven’t been given an official release date yet, but the sequel is expected to come out later this year.

In a November Instagram post, Cavill shared that he had completed his final day on set. In January, Netflix confirmed that filming had finished. Then in May Netflix Tweeted: “The sequel is afoot.”

This all seems to indicate that the film will be coming out very soon.

Who is in the cast?

Bobby Brown and Cavill are returning as Enola and Sherlock, plus Helena Bonham Carter reprises her role as Enola’s mother Eudoria Holmes. The sequel will also see Louis Partridge return to play Tewkesbury, Adeel Akhtar return as Lestrade and Susie Wokoma return as Edith.

Joining the cast is Sharon Duncan-Brewster, who is best known for her role as Liet-Kynes in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, David Thewlis, who is best known for playing Remus Lupin in Harry Potter and Hannah Dodd whose credits include Bridgerton and Anatomy of a Scandal.

Who is behind the camera?

Harry Bradbeer returns to direct Enola Holmes 2. Bradbeer had previously worked on Fleabag and Killing Eve.

Speaking to Decider in September 2020 about the possibility of a follow-up, the director said: “I know quite a bit, which I can’t divulge. But I’m excited about the other things that she’s going to do. She’s such an extraordinary character that we’re going to dig out some more secrets about her.

“If we do go again, there’s a lot of issues left in this dysfunctional family. Not only in the country, which is dysfunctional, but the family as well.”

What is the plot about?

This time Enola Holmes gets to take on her first mystery as a working detective. The case is about a missing girl and she calls on her brother and friends to help get to the bottom of matters. The film is set in the late nineteenth century, like part one.

Where did the first film leave Enola?

Without giving too much away, things were largely concluded in the first film, but Enola was already itching for another adventure.

As the film concluded she said in a monologue to the camera: “I now see that being alone doesn’t mean I have to be lonely. Mother never wanted that. She wanted me to find my freedom, my future, my purpose.

“I am a detective, I am a decipherer and I am a finder of lost souls. My life is my own. And the future is up to us.” The drama!

Who is Millie Bobby Brown?

Most TV fans will know Millie Bobby Brown first and foremost as the character Eleven in Netflix’s Stranger Things. The British actress was just twelve years old when the series came out and brought her international fame.

Brown was apparently integral to the creation of the Enola Holmes film, which gave the actor her first producing credit.

Speaking to Vogue in September 2020 she explained that: “I had a gut feeling I wanted to bring [the books] to life. We took it to [the studio] Legendary [Pictures] and explained the premise and why this story needs to be told.”

Speaking about Enola’s character, Brown also said: “Her story is about how she is afraid of being alone, and in the end, she finds her purpose in life. That’s the story of growing up. I’ve gone through that. It resonates with me in so many ways.”
