Ewan McGregor Linked With Marvel’s Doctor Strange

Marvel’s search for a man to play Doctor Strange has been long and troubled. They’ve had a director in place for some time and have writers working away at the script right now, but no star to tie it all together.

Joaquin Phoenix was the man they wanted, and the man they nearly had before talks ended unceremoniously last month, so now Marvel are back to square one and their search is drawing in new names such as Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.

Badass Digest reported first  that the ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘Star Wars’ star McGregor is doing his research on the character and that Marvel are “looking at him” ahead of a probable meeting.

It’s not much to go on but does seemingly confirm that even after the departure of Phoenix Marvel is still on the lookout for an middle-aged actor for the part. McGregor is 43, four years Phoenix’s senior.

Variety later revealed the extent of Marvel’s search, also linking McConaughey, Leto, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke to the part.

Leto is said to be “aggressively pursuing” the part, while McConaughey represents Marvel’s confidence in attracting the biggest, most high-calibre actors following Phoenix’s interest. Gyllenhaal is said to be interested as well and Hawke registered his own interest recently too.

Scott Derrickson was hired to direct the film based on his established career in horror, indicating that Marvel’s first foray into the mystic world of Strange’s adventures will be tinged with a twisted darkness.

‘Doctor Strange’ will be released in the summer of 2016… if they ever find someone to play the title role.
