Fantastic Four Rumours: New Origin Story, Sue Storm Adopted?

A report has claimed that 2015’s ‘The Fantastic Four’ will rewrite both the origin of the team’s powers, and the character history of Sue and Johnny Storm.

20th Century Fox’s upcoming reboot of the Marvel Comics super-team was already one of the most controversial comic book movies ever before cameras even started rolling.

Chief among the complaints of some fans was the decision to cast African-American actor Michael B Jordan in the role of Johnny Storm, traditionally a Caucasian character (as portrayed by Chris Evans in Fox’s earlier ‘Fantastic Four’ films).

It has subsequently been widely assumed that, as Sue Storm will be appearing in the traditionally blonde-haired, white-skinned form of Kate Mara (‘Transcendence’), she and Johnny would be at best half-siblings in this version of events.

Now, a report from Shmoes Know claims to have learned the truth of the matter.

Rebuffing suggestions that Jordan’s Johnny would be an adopted son, Shmoes Know declare “we have heard from our source that it is actually Mara’s Sue Storm who is adopted in the film, with her and Michael B. Jordan’s parents being African American!

"So it’s still basically what we have all assumed about their relationship, only the film has flipped it around.”

This seems likely enough, particularly given that the film also stars African-American actor Reg E. Cathey as Sue and Johnny’s father, Dr Franklin Storm.

As regards the origins of the Fantastic Four’s powers, Schmoes Know say “we have also heard that instead of the group gaining their powers from a failed scientific mission in outer space like in the original comics and (awful) existing films, this time the group’s origin story will be much more like their Ultimate versions.

“In the film, the team will gain their powers through a lab experiment gone wrong in a way, where they create a portal to another world or dimension (it’s not clear) and they get their powers after the exposure to this other dimension/planet.

"Much like how the group gets their powers in the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics, after they are engulfed in a failed teleporter experiment.”

Starring alongside Mara’s Sue Storm/Invisible Woman and Jordan’s Johnny Storm/Human Torch are Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Toby Kebbell as Dr Doom and Tim Blake Nelson as Mole Man.

‘Chronicle’s Josh Trank directs, while the screenplay is from Fox’s go-to Marvel movie writer Simon Kinberg (‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’).

The film’s UK release date is not yet confirmed, but it will be Summer 2015 – and (despite the controversy) a sequel is already scheduled for 2017.
