The cast of the hit 1990s romcom Father of the Bride is set to reunite on Netflix this week, according to an announcement made by the streaming platform.

Netflix released a video on social media, captioned “something is coming” and featuring Steve Martin’s character George Banks checking his email and discovering an invite to a very special video call.

"25 years later, the Banks family returns for a very special event to benefit World Central Kitchen," the video reveals.

World Central Kitchen is a non-profit organisation, which provides food to people in the wake of natural disasters.

Father of the Bride followed Martin’s character as he took a dislike to his daughter’s (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) fiancé and refused to give her away at the upcoming wedding.

It earned positive reviews from critics and proved to be a box office hit, raking in more than $100m (£78.5m) worldwide.

This will be the first time the cast of Father of the Bride have reunited en masse since the film’s sequel in 1995 — though some of the stars have crossed paths since.

Netflix’s confirmation of the reunion comes a few weeks after producer and co-writer Nancy Meyers teased on Instagram that fans of the movie should prepare for something exciting.

“If he thought a wedding was a lot, how would he react to 2020?” she wrote. “Coming soon to the phone in your hand.”

Fans have been eager for news on Father of the Bride since it was included in a list of properties Disney could be rebooting for the Disney+ streaming platform.

Virtual cast reunions have been a frequent sight in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus lockdown, with the casts of movies like The Goonies, Back to the Future and Ferris Bueller's Day Off coming together via video call.

The Father of the Bride reunion is due to premiere on Netflix’s YouTube and Facebook pages at 11pm UK time on Friday.
