'Feminist Mad Max' Meme: The World Is Fire and Blood and Equal Rights

Mad Max: Fury Road has one of the best female action heroes ever (Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron) and a plot about women seizing control of their own destinies. (“We are not things!”) In other words, it’s already a feminist movie. But what if Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a man of few words, was secretly an uber-feminist himself? That’s the premise of Feminist Mad Max, a Tumblr that pairs screen caps from Fury Road with Max’s woman-empowering sentiments.

The new Tumblr is modeled after ‘Feminist Ryan Gosling,’ a mega-successful meme that captioned pictures of Ryan Gosling with empowering messages, always beginning with the phrase “Hey girl.” (i.e. “Hey girl. Since you make $0.77 for every dollar I earn, I’m happy to pay for the movie tickets tonight.”) In Feminist Mad Max, that “hey girl” is directed at Furiosa, and Max is a guy who’s totally cool with a woman taking the lead, as she does throughout most of the movie.

“Hey girl. You can use my shoulder as a rifle stand, as you’re the better shot of the two of us,” he says in one pic. In another: “Hey girl. It’s not possible to survive alone out here. Thanks for rescuing me.”

So far, the Tumblr has only a handful of entries, but we’d love to see the idea taken even further. How about delving into some older Mad Max movies, like Beyond Thunderdome? After all, Max helped set up a female-led society in that movie, too. And what feminist blog wouldn’t benefit from a little more Tina Turner?
