First Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trailer Explained

Finally! The first trailer for ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’, Joss Whedon’s much-anticipated super-sequel, has arrived setting the internet alight.

There’s so much crammed into 136 seconds it’s hard to process it all at once, so join us as we dissect it frame by frame to get up to speed with everything we know about ‘Avengers 2’ so far…

Avengers goes global

image

This sun-drenched opening shot of Johannesburg reveals the global ambition of Marvel’s second Avengers film.

The Iron Man/Hulk showdown (more on that in a minute) will take place in the downtown region of the South African city. Why? We don’t know yet.

The origins of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver

image

This is something we weren’t expecting to see. It’s a pre-superpower Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, when they were just known as Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, at some sort of protest. Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) doesn’t have his steely-grey hair yet, but what are they protesting against? It’s unclear but it does suggest we’ll see their origins in the film – could an Avenger be involved? Stark Industries would be a likely offender.

Seoul action sequence

image

Here we see Captain America on a busy road, surrounded by destruction. We think this was the sequence shot in Seoul (note the licence plates) that Joss Whedon shut down the city for earlier this year.

Hawkeye in Eastern Europe

image

A quick shot of Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye here. We think this shot is from the Eastern European segment of the film that was shot in Italy. Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Ultron himself were snapped by paparazzi in photos leaked from the set earlier this year.

The new Quinjet

image

Here’s the first look inside the newly redesigned Quinjet, the aircraft the Avengers use to travel around in. You can see Cap, Black Widow, Bruce Banner, and Thor. We presume Hawkeye is flying the thing, so where’s Iron Man? Has something bad happened to Tony Stark? They look pretty upset.

Introducing Ultron

image

This is Ultron, well an early version at least. We saw this clip in preview footage shown by Disney at Comic-Con back in May, and in our write-up we called him Marvel’s most fearsome villain yet. Now you know why.

War Machine returns?

image

The gang are gathered in Stark Tower, or as it’s now known, Avengers Tower in New York for some sort of gathering. Don Cheadle’s Rhodey is there on the right, so it looks like War Machine/Iron Patriot could play a part in ‘Age of Ultron’.

But who is the mystery female on the left? We already see Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow (second left) and Cobie Smulders’ Agent Hill (fourth from right), so we guess this is the new character played by South Korean newcomer Claudia Kim.

The Iron Legion drone

image

So here we can see an Iron Legion drone, being held menacingly by Ultron. The Legion is an army of robots, created by Tony Stark to help them police the world from threats. Look at Ultron though – he looks to be inhabiting a messed up Iron Man suit. Tony had remote controlled decoy suits in ‘Iron Man 3’, so is Ultron born from one of those?

Villain’s lair

image

This mountain castle is probably the lair of Baron Von Strucker, the villain that appeared in mid-credit sequence of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, who has Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch held hostage. We’ve been told the pair of “Miracles” are antagonists in the film, so why are the Avengers mounting a rescue?

Mysterious scenes

image
image
image

These few shots seem a bit disjointed. First we see Bruce Banner alone in a forest, struggling with his rage.

Next we see Black Widow doing a Batman and standing sternly in a skyscraper, then a few shots that suggest a hospital and some sort of surgery. We have no clue what that means just yet.

Ultron’s upgrade

image
image

This is Ultron again, but in a much more evolved state. He’s with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but it’s unclear where they are. It looks like it may be the lab prison they were being held in by Von Strucker, but it’s not 100% clear.

Ultron’s army

image

Here we can see one of Ultron’s most terrifying powers, the ability to manifest hundreds of drones at once, working together as his own private robot army. It looks like the Avengers are going to have their work cut out this time around.

Samuel L Jackson’s cameo

image

“It’s the end. The end of the path I started us on.” This is a great line and it hints at fractures that are starting to form in the team. “Nothing lasts forever” adds Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow. We also see Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury. Jackson told us earlier this year that he only has a cameo in the film this time around.

Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch

image

Elizabeth Olsen plays Scarlet Witch, who seems to be struggling with her telekinetic powers here. This looks like the same scene we saw Hawkeye in earlier.

Hulkbuster armour!

image

This is the money shot right here. We knew the Hulkbuster armour was coming as Marvel revealed it in some early concept art, but now we see it in all its Hulkbustin’ glory.

A great stunt

image

Black Widow rides into battle on a motorbike (possibly Captain America’s) via the Quinjet in one of the coolest shots of the trailer. It’s not clear which sequence this is from, but we’re guessing Seoul, not Johannesburg as the cars are driving on the right and not the left.

Quicksilver in action

image

Finally we get to see Quicksilver in action. Taylor-Johnson has big boots to fill after the same character was used in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ to great effect earlier in 2014.

Captain America back in the 1940s?

image

This shot is a bit of a mystery as it appears to show Captain America back in the 1940s. Note the period costumes and hairdos. We’re guessing this is a dream sequence.

Andy Serkis’ mysterious role

image

Oh look, it’s Andy Serkis, and he’s not in a performance capture leotard. We know he was brought in to help with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk mo-cap before Joss Whedon bulked up his part, presumably as some sort of salty sea dog judging by his hair, beard, and sweat combo.

Something for the ladies

image

Here’s Marvel’s trademark gratuitous pecs shot. Good work Hemsworth.

Romance blossoming for two Avengers?

image

It looks as though the rumoured romantic subplot could be between the Hulk and Black Widow. She looks like the only person who can talk to Bruce when he’s mean and green.

Villainous ballet

image

No idea why there’s ballet going on here, but we think that could be Von Strucker at the piano.

Tension

image

Fisticuffs! There’s tension in the team but why is Thor grabbing Tony Stark by the throat? He must be mad because Tony dissed his ponytail. Or, more likely, for creating Ultron.

Captain America’s broken shield

image

The mighty Thor has fallen! Cap’s shield is broken! The whole world is going to do-do! (Although we hope this is just a dream sequence).

Ultron in all his glory

image

The closing shot. James Spader has provided the voice and done mo-cap for the part, and we have to admit, it’s pretty effing scary. “There are no strings on me,” is a Pinocchio reference, referring to Ultron’s genesis as a puppet of Tony Stark.

It’s stirring stuff and we can’t wait for more trailers ahead of the film’s release in April next year.
