First Images: Poltergeist 2015

With just about everything getting a remake nowadays, especially where horror movies are concerned, it should be no surprise that the first images of a ‘Poltergeist’ remake have emerged.

A series of shots from the Gil Kenan-directed reboot went up at USA Today, so here’s a glimpse at some of the more interesting ones that are inspired by the iconic moments of the 1982 original.

In truth, it doesn’t offer a whole lot in terms of revealing anything new, but fans of remakes — and I’m sure there’s a few out there somewhere — can see what’s in store for the 2015 version.

The new movie, starring Sam Rockwell (‘Moon’), Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris, will hit cinemas this summer, and in 3D no less.

But its director Kenan acknowledges the difficulty of the task at hand and the importance to handle such a classic, well-known horror delicately.

"Whenever someone approaches material that’s so beloved, there’s a reflexive reaction to be worried," says Kenan. "It’s a responsibility we take very seriously. We’re working to make a ‘Poltergeist’ film that lives up to the original’s legacy."

To add further pressure, Kenan will be all too familiar with who put the original together over 30 years ago. Steven Spielberg co-wrote the screenplay, ‘The Texas Chainsaw’s’ Tobe Hooper helmed, and Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams  and Heather O’Rourke starred.

However, with Sam Raimi on his side as producer, we could be set for a rare reboot that meets expectation.

Speaking of the new approach, he had some interesting points to make.

"Unlike the traditional horror film, I wanted to put together a cast to give weight and reality to these characters. It’s the way to anchor the family," says Kenan. "It’s such an emotional story at the core. Parents fighting to get their child back from the beyond."

We’ll know soon enough if this reworking can stand apart from the numerous bad remakes out there, or whether Raimi and co. can produce some cinematic magic.

The ‘Poltergeist’ reboot is in UK cinemas on 31 July.
