First Look At Jessica Chastain In Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak

The first official image has been released from Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming ‘Crimson Peak,’ showcasing actress Jessica Chastain - and the distinctive visual style on which the director has built his name.

Given that the Mexican director’s most recent efforts have been the FX-heavy blockbusters ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘Hellboy II: the Golden Army,’ it’s easy to overlook his roots in more intimate, adult-oriented supernatural dramas.

On the evidence of this image (shared on Twitter by The Film Stage),  'Crimson Peak’ may well mark a return to the territory of ‘Cronos,’ ‘The Devil’s Backbone’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.’

Indeed, it will be his first such film to be made as an English language production for a Hollywood studio (Universal, via Legendary Entertainment).

Set in a Gothic mansion in Cumbria in the 19th century, ‘Crimson Peak’ casts Chastain as Lady Lucille Sharpe, sister of the enigmatic Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston). Mia Wasikowska takes the lead as novelist Edith Cushing, who marries Sir Thomas only to find he is not the person she thought he was.

Charlie Hunnam co-stars as Dr Alan McMichael, a character the actor has described as “a very sweet, shy, quiet, dorky dude who doesn’t get the girl.” His ‘Pacific Rim’ co-star Burn Gorman will also appear.

Not a great deal else is known plot-wise, although del Toro has promised a “ghost story and a Gothic romance,” and has also hinted at “kinky” elements, which would be rather virgin territory (no pun intended) for the filmmaker.

Universal will release ‘Crimson Peak’ in October 2015, by which time del Toro and Hunnam should be in production on ‘Pacific Rim 2’ - which is provisionally intended to be followed up by a third film.

The notoriously busy filmmaker has also turned in a script to Warner Bros for ‘Justice League Dark,’ though it remains uncertain whether this is something he will have time to direct.
