George Clooney Gives Brilliant Charlie Hebdo Tribute In Golden Globes Speech

In a night of Bill Cosby gags and backslapping, it was George Clooney who gave the classiest speech of the evening at the 2015 Golden Globes.

Not only did he melt the hearts of many with words for his new wife Amal, but he signed off with a tribute to the journalists who died at the hands of extremists in Paris last week.

Accepting the Cecil B. DeMille gong for his work in Hollywood and his off-screen activism, he said: “Today is an extraordinary day.

“Millions marched not only in Paris but all around the world, and there were Christians and Jews and Muslims, leaders of countries all over the world, they didn’t march in protest, they marched in support of the idea that we will not walk in fear.

“Je suis Charlie.”

He and wife Amal were among those who wore ‘Je Suis Charlie’ pin badges to the glittering Hollywood event in Los Angeles last night.

Helen Mirren, Diane Kruger and Kathy Bates also showed solidarity with the French satirical magazine.

Clooney went on to pay tribute to both Lauren Bacall and Robin Williams, who died last year.

“If you’re in this room, you’ve caught the brass ring, you get to do what you’ve always dreamed to do and be celebrated, and that ain’t losing,” he said.

“I don’t remember what awards Lauren Bacall won. I just remember her saying ‘You know how to whistle, Steve, just put your lips together and blow’. I have no idea what hardware Robin Williams took home but I sure remember ‘Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys, make your lives extraordinary’.

He also spoke directly to his wife Amal, whom he married last year.

“It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love, and even better when you’ve been waiting your whole life,” Clooney said on stage to his wife, clearly getting a bit choked up.

“Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband.”
