One of the COVID era's bigger hit films was Gerard Butler's disaster movie Greenland.

The film was a surprise critical success for Butler and made an impressive box office/digital haul during a time where most studio movies were being delayed – so it only seems fair a sequel is in the works.

According to Deadline, Butler and co-star Morena Baccarin will re-team with director Ric Roman Waugh on the follow-up movie Greenland: Migration.

The duo reprise their roles as the Garritys as they leave the safety of their Greenland bunker to travel across the post-apocalyptic landscape of Europe to find themselves a new home.

Cameras are expected to roll on Greenland: Migration next year, but there is no release date yet for the project.

Digital Spy spoke to Butler about the original Greenland earlier this year, when he suggested the film was a success because it differed from the action roles he'd been taking up to that point.

"I had said to my team just before, 'It'd be great [to] have a character that has more of the Tom Hanks than Mike Bannon'. Shortly after, Greenland arrived on my doorstep," he explained.

"It has all the trappings and all the spectacle, but really it's an intimate character portrait and a love story, really, of this family coming back together.

"They're very fractured at the beginning of the movie and strangely through all of the insanity that they have to go through as the pressure builds and society starts to decay, it brings them back together as they appreciate what's important in life."

Greenland is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video UK as well as on Amazon US.
