Ghostbusters Reboot: Plot Details Emerge, As Emma Stone Explains Passing On Film

It would appear we have our first semi-official synopsis of Sony’s new ‘Ghostbusters,’ as the eagerly-anticipated/much-dreaded (delete as applicable) reboot from director Paul Feig begins production, with Boston, MA doubling for New York City.

And in other ‘Ghostbusters’ news, Academy Award nominee Emma Stone - who was for some time hotly tipped to star alongside Melissa McCarthy in Kristen Wiig in the gender-reversed reinterpretation of the 1984 comedy classic - has confirmed that she was indeed offered a role, and explained why she opted to decline.

Stone tole the Wall Street Journal, “The script was really funny. It just didn’t feel like the right time for me. A franchise is a big commitment—it’s a whole thing. I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water.”

Stone, of course, only recently got out of a major franchise, the two-film ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ series, also based at Sony. It would seem likely that the role she turned down ultimately went to Kate McKinnon.

Meanwhile, the Boston Herald spilled the beans on the basic premise of the new movie, and it certainly doesn’t feel lightyears away from the original:

“Wiig and McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia.

“Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton pack-packing phantom wranglers [McKinnon and Leslie Jones], and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.”

The Boston Herald go on to remark that appearances from the original Ghostbusters cast look unlikely: Dan Aykroyd recently said he’d be open to it but didn’t seem too expectant, and Murray’s reluctance to return is near-legendary.

However - possible mild spoiler here - they do remark we may have one notable character from the original making a comeback… and this recent Twitter post from Feig may provide some clues there.

That’s right - it looks like Slimer’s back.

‘Ghostbusters’ is due in UK cinemas 22 July 2016.
