Golden Globes 2015: Shock Wins, Losses, Snubs and Surprises

The winners of the 2015 Golden Globes were revealed last night with Oscar front-runners ‘Boyhood’, ‘Birdman’, and Eddie Redmayne all picking up awards as expected. See the full winners list here.

Despite the short odds on these wins, the awards in Hollywood still offered up a few surprises on the night. None more so than Wes Anderson’s ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ which pipped the much-fancied ‘Birdman’ to the post for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

The raucous farce featuring Ralph Fiennes, Ed Norton and Tilda Swinton is now starting to look like a serious Oscar contender thanks to its Golden Globes win and its pack-leading haul of 11 BAFTA nominations.

Amy Adams’ Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy win for ‘Big Eyes’ was a leftfield win to most observers. Tim Burton’s biopic received a lukewarm critical reception upon release, and Adams’ performance is masterful but very low key.

Emily Blunt was thought to be a contender here for ‘Into The Woods’, but instead Adams picked up the gong. Don’t worry Emily; we’re sure your time will come.

Another actress who may have harboured secret expectations for a surprise victory only to be snubbed last minute is Jennifer Aniston. She’s earning rave reviews for her make-up free performance in ‘Cake’, but it looks like 2015 is Julianne Moore’s year.

The redheaded star won for ‘Still Alice’ in which she plays a professor diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The film is still yet to be released here in the UK.

‘The LEGO Movie’ dominated the Pixar-free 2014, particularly here in the UK where it was the highest-grossing movie of the year period. Unfortunately, it wasn’t an awesome night for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s animated romp, which lost out to ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ for Best Animated Feature Film.

Pah! Who needs awards when you’re rolling in box office receipts, right guys?

The biggest upset of the night though happened in the television awards.

‘True Detective’, the chilly crime epic starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, considered by many to be the landmark TV event of last year, was completely shut out

FX’s ‘Fargo’ won Best TV Movie or Miniseries, Billy Bob Thornton won Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie over both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, and ‘Downton Abbey’ star Joanne Froggatt beat Michelle Monaghan to Best Actress.

Both shows wills return for second series, so we look forward to the rematch at future awards.
