Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Is “A Story About Fathers”

James Gunn has dropped some minor hints about where ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ might be headed plot-wise - and it’s something to do with dads.

The writer-director spoke to Vulture at the LA premiere of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (or ‘Marvel Avengers: The Age of Ultron’  as we’re now meant to refer to it for some reason), and the question of where things were headed with the cosmic super-team sequel naturally came up.

“There’s a lot of stuff I’m excited about in the new movie. Listen, I’m still excited about Star-Lord’s character and where he goes.

“At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it’s exciting to go there.“

Gunn also hinted that he’s in it for the long haul with the Guardians: "I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be… And the third one!”

This may be a bit of a spoiler if you haven’t seen ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ but the identity of Peter ‘Star-Lord’ Quill’s father remains one of the big mysteries. All we know for sure is, he isn’t human, and it was at his order that the young Quill was abducted from Earth (or, as they call it, Terra).

Oh, and we know that Quill’s father is not just any old alien, given that Glenn Close’s Nova Prime described him as “like nothing we’ve seen before.”

However, Gunn has also stated elsewhere that Star-Lord Sr. will not be the same as in the comic books, in which he is galactic emperor J’Son of Spartax (and Star-Lord is an actual title of rank).

Of course, questions of fatherhood might not relate only to Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord. Dave Bautista’s Drax was himself a father, before his daughter and wife were killed by Ronan; meanwhile, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora is an adoptive daughter of the big bad himself, Thanos. Or might it even relate to the scientists who created Rocket Raccoon, a matter only briefly alluded to in the first film?

Well, with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′ not due until May 2017, we’ve got plenty of time left to speculate…
