Guardians of the Galaxy Becomes Third Biggest Marvel Movie

Even the most optimistic of Marvel fans with the utmost faith in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ couldn’t have predicted what an enormous success the film would become.

No film this summer has captured audience imaginations like ‘Guardians’ and now it has surpassed the original ‘Iron Man’ to become Marvel’s third highest-grossing movie to date.

'Guardians' has grossed a worldwide total of $644 million compared to ‘Iron Man’s $585m. It now sits only behind ‘Avengers Assemble’ ($1.5bn) and ‘Iron Man 3’ ($1.2bn).

James Gunn’s sci-fi adventure won’t pass those figures, and next year’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ will likely knock it back down to fourth - but that shouldn’t take away from what the film once thought to be a huge risk has achieved.

Domestically the film has blown away the competition, even beating Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ - though that film has made more internationally.

The huge initial success of ‘Guardians’ prompted Marvel to quickly announce a sequel which is currently being written by Gunn, who also returns to the director’s chair.

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' is set for release on July 28, 2017.
