Director James Gunn has been talking about the planned 2017 sequel to his smash hit ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

Speaking at Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit, Gunn said that all five original team members would return, that other characters would also be returning and that the team will be growing with the inclusion of new members.

“I spent all day on August 1, the day the first movie was released, writing ‘Guardians 2,’” Gunn said. “I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story.”

‘Guardians’ started memorably with hero Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) abduction before an unexpected musical sequence. “It’s going to be a really surprising open,” joked Gunn, talking of the sequel. “What happens is all the characters are killed in the first 10 minutes. In really horribly brutal fashion.”

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has been the biggest film of the summer, recently becoming the third highest grossing Marvel film ever behind only ‘Avengers Assemble’ and ‘Iron Man 3’. A sequel was announced due to the huge buzz before the film was even released.

Gunn also joked about the potential for the crossover with the ‘Star Wars’ universe, another franchise owned by Disney.

“Star Wars was a long time ago,” Gunn said. “It would have to be time travel.”

‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ will be released on July 28, 2017.
