Guillermo Del Toro Reveals Pacific Rim Trilogy Plans

Director Guillermo del Toro has revealed that the in-development ‘Pacific Rim’ sequel is intended to lead directly into a third film.

While it was always known that the 2013 giant monsters versus giant robots epic was intended to launch a series, the somewhat lacklustre box office and mixed response the film received from fans and critics in the US and Europe cast significant doubt on that.

However, when ‘Pacific Rim’ became one of the biggest hits of the year in Asia, the gears went into motion on a second film, which the director says is intended to go into production in late 2015.

Del Toro tells Collider, “We’ve got the first draft of the movie now, and we are going to spend another four or five months on the screenplay before we start pre-production… in August, September next year. We start shooting November, December next year.

“The direction we’re going is very different from the first. All I can say is some of your favourite characters come back, some others don’t, because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say, ‘let’s hope we have three movies.’

“So some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it’ll ramp up on the third one. I hope people like it, but you’re going to get a very different experience from the first one.”

‘Pacific Rim’ starred Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi as pilots of the Jaeger robots, Idris Elba as their hard-nosed boss, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman as scientists aiding in the battle against the Kaiju, and Ron Perlman as a black market dealer of Kaiju body parts who gets caught up in it all.

We won’t mention who’s likely to return so as to avoid potential spoilers for those who still haven’t seen the original…

It’s certainly a bold move on the part of del Toro and Legendary Entertainment to head into a follow-up with such big plans, considering that the first film wasn’t quite so well received as they’d hoped.

And of course, we might also remember that the last time del Toro attempted to set up a third film in a series, it was with ‘Hellboy II: the Golden Army’ – and, much to the chagrin of fans, the director has since declared that the third ‘Hellboy’ is unlikely to ever be made.

Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself…
