Avengers 2 Is Darker And Gives Hawkeye The Best Lines, Say Critics

The first press screening for ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ happened overnight and we’re happy to report that critics are giving the much-anticipated super-sequel a big thumbs up.

Many singled out Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow as the film’s stand out stars, although there are murmurs that the film isn’t as “fun” as the first ‘Avengers’ outing with some describing the film as “bleak”.

The assembled US movie press took to Twitter to share their initial reactions after the screening in LA which it appears Mark Ruffalo also attended. Slash Film’s Peter Sciretta called the film “bigger, more complex, darker, more action packed than the first film, but ultimately not as much fun.”

Critic Drew Taylor echoed those sentiments describing the sequel as “darker, weirder and more emotional than the original.” However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing as he adds, “It’s also the thrill ride to beat this summer.”

Geek Tyrant’s Ben Pearson also called the tone of Joss Whedon’s follow up into question, saying ‘Age of Ultron’ is “a lot more bleak than the first”, but he also said the film has “tons of amazing scenes & a bunch of laugh out loud moments.”

The early reports also suggest that Joss Whedon has atoned for consigning Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye to the sidelines for the majority of the first ‘Avengers’ film, by elevating his role immeasurably this time around.

Mike Ryan of Uproxx says, “out of all the AGE OF ULTRON chaos, somehow Hawkeye gets the best role in the movie. AND the best line of the movie, maybe the series.”

He later added that he preferred the sequel to the original, “mostly because Hawkeye is basically the main character.”

Screencrush’s Mike Sampson concurred adding, “the usual Avengers supporting players stand out this time. Black Widow kicks ass and Hawkeye has the best lines.”

That Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow gets to “kick ass” in this film is pretty incredible considering she was pregnant for virtually the duration of the shoot. We hope her stunt double got paid overtime this time around.

You’ll be able to see if the hype matches the movie when ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ hits UK cinemas on April 23. Watch a trailer below.
