How Ant-Man Was Filmed On A Tiny Scale

‘Ant-Man’ is one of Marvel’s biggest risks to date, but instead of going big it looks as though director Peyton Reed has brought the whole production down to size…

It’s no secret that ‘Ant-Man’ focusses on the miniscule side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, its hero has the ability to shrink down to almost microscopic levels. But how have they tackled the rather impressive shrinking scenes? It looks as though over-sized props are a thing of the past.

And while ‘Ant-Man’ may have a big budget, it seems they’ve shot the film on a tiny scale…

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, ‘Ant-Man’ director Peyton Reed revealed the much smaller scale of Marvel’s latest big-screen blockbuster.

“What we’re doing is very different from ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids’,” he explained. “It’s going to be much more experiential.”

Of course, we’ve already snatched a brief glimpse of Scott Lang’s shrinking process in the recent ‘Ant-Man’ teaser trailer… but judging from the newly released concept art, we’ll be getting a lot more where that came from. After all, ‘Ant-Man’s diminutive size is good for something…

Obviously, we’ve all seen the iconic shots from ‘Honey, I Shrunk the kids’… but instead of forcing the actors to use with huge, over-sized props, it looks as though ‘Ant-Man’ is taking a more technologically advanced approach. Appropriate, considering Ant-Man’s scientific roots.

“There are cameras and lenses that make small areas look like the most epic landscapes,” said’Ant-Man’ co-producer Brad Winderbaum. “Then we’re shooting motion capture with Paul to insert Ant-Man into those environments.”

And the end results are stunning.

We’ve already seen Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd) as he miniaturises himself with the Ant-Man suit… and after a brief jaunt piloting a flying ant, these impressive visuals give us a sense of the tiny scale of things to come.

Of course, there’s plenty more where that came from, and we can expect plenty of hijinks from the professional thief turned superhero when he gets the opportunity to shrink himself down at will.

‘Ant-Man’ it seems is a big story, wrapped in tiny proportions. And with some stunning visuals that bring the miniature world to life, we can expect big things from Marvel’s latest superhero.

And let’s face it – Paul Rudd has already proved that size doesn’t matter.

‘Ant-Man’ heads to cinemas on 17 July 2015.
