How Dwayne Johnson’s Serious Injury Almost Scuppered Hercules

When you watch ‘Hercules’, you probably won’t realize that The Rock is in quite a lot of pain.

That’s because the star was fighting at ‘Wrestlemania’ just before filming started, which resulted in damaged tendons in his pelvis.

The injury was potentially career-threatening and would have meant pushing the shooting of the sword and sandals epic back by at least a year.

“That was some good pain,” says Johnson. “I elected not to have surgery and just rehab and hopefully over time the tendons would just scar tissue up and I’ll be fine and maybe not walk with a limp.”

Unfortunately, the tendons being torn weakened his abdominal wall necessitating triple hernia surgery.

Johnson went under the knife, which meant pushing the shoot back two more weeks. But despite the consternation of director Brett Ratner and the crew who were prepping in Budapest that their hero wouldn’t make it through, Johnson was back on his feet five times faster than most people with similar problems.

During the four-month shoot, he gradually improved and managed to get through filming with no more issues.

“Overall,” laughs Johnson, “Hercules has a very strong pelvis.”

Hercules is released on 25 July.
