It looks as though we have our first hint at what ‘Independence Day 2’ will bring to the table… more aliens.

According to Collider, the following synopsis appeared as part of a Fox information sheet for the upcoming Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.

“After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale,” it reads. “Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.”

“But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

Of course, ‘Independence Day’ was a ground-breaking movie back in 1996, when big screen blockbusters weren’t just an everyday affair. And it looks as though the upcoming sequel is a promise to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps.

But it seems that’s been the plan for a long time…

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2013, director Roland Emmerich hinted towards an ‘Independence Day’ sequel which sounds an awful lot like this synopsis.

“The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back,” explained the director, who at the time had completed two scripts with ‘Independence Day’ co-writer Dean Devlin. “They know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

And there’s even a hint towards the idea of scavenged alien tech.

“It’s a changed world,” he said. “It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.”

How will this transpire on the big screen? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But with Bill Pullman, Jeff Golblum and Brent Spiner seemingly returning, it looks as though the fate of the Earth is in good hands.

‘Independence Day 2’ heads to cinemas on 24 June 2016.
