Unknown Cast As Will Smith's Son In Independence Day 2

The lead role in 'Independence Day 2' has been announced, with relative unknown Jessie Usher set to play Will Smith's son in the science fiction sequel.

Jeff Goldblum will also return to the franchise and will be joined in the cast by 'Hunger Games' star Liam Hemsworth, director Roland Emmerich has confirmed.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that 23-year-old Usher, who leads the Starz’s series Survivor’s Remorse, will play the son of Will Smith's character.

Smith, sadly, won't be returning for the sequel, quite possibly because he's too expensive.

Obviously it’s quite a bit catch for the young, up-and-coming actor. The original ‘Independence Day’ is seen as Will Smith’s breakout role and Usher will hope to follow in his footsteps.

His film CV is scant to say the least, but he has been a regular on TV with shows like the above-mentioned 'Survivor's Remorse', 'The Mentalist' and 'Criminal Minds'.

But how will Captain Hiller’s son fit into the wider story? And why is Goldblum's boffin David Levinson back? Expect an official plot synopsis soon.

Meanwhile, Hemsworth is to play the son-in-law of Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore, while there's also talk that Pullman himself could return.

‘Independence Day 2’ heads to cinemas across the UK on 1 July 2016.
