The Independence Day sequel has a greenlight from 20th Century Fox, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Director Roland Emmerich is in negotiations to direct the sequel to the 1996 Will Smith blockbuster.

Producer Dean Devlin, who worked on the original film, shared the development on his Twitter account on Wednesday. Emmerich, Devlin and Harald Kloser are producing the film.

While there has been no casting information shared about the film thus far, Jeff Goldblum said in an October interview with Time that he had been in talks with Emmerich and Devlin about appearing in the sequel.

No word on whether Smith will appear in the film.

Emmerich said last year that the star will not be present for the follow-up.

The sequel is set for release on June 24, 2016, which would be just short of twenty years since the original title was released on July 3, 1996.

The original film grossed more than $800 million worldwide at the box office.
