Insidious Chapter 3 Trailer Is Loaded With Jump Scares

Prepare for our third visit to The Further - or perhaps that should be the first? Though titled ‘Insidious Chapter 3,’ this third film in the horror series is in fact a prequel, following psychic investigator Elise (Lin Shaye) on her first supernatural misadventure.

This explains the absence of Patrick Wilson, Rose Bryne, Barbara Hershey and the rest of the Lambert family from the first two ‘Insidious’ films - a gap filled by Dermot Mulroney as a widower and Stefanie Scott as his daughter, who would appear to be having a hard time coming to terms with the loss of her mother.

But as Elise warns her, “when you call out to one of the dead, all of them can hear you.” It would appear that the motivations of some of the dead aren’t exactly maternal - and a couple of them look familiar…

With James Wan, director and co-writer of the first two films, moving on to ‘Fast & Furious 7,’ ‘Insidious Chapter 3′ sees writer Leigh Whannell promoted to the big chair, making his feature directorial debut.

On this evidence, Whannell has clearly been paying close attention to his longtime collaborator Wan’s technique - and well he might, given the two have been working together since the original ‘Saw’ back in 2004.

It’s all there - the slick visuals, smooth camera moves and lingering silences punctuated by sudden jump scares. Problem is, it all feels just a little too textbook to us, leaving some doubt as to whether ‘Insidious Chapter 3′ is likely to have anything at all new up its sleeve.

Still, seasoned horror fans may be pleased to see that - while the trailer and poster highlight the young Stefanie Scott - returning actress Lin Shaye (a long time genre veteran, dating back to her early appearances in the likes of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and ‘Critters’) has finally reached leading lady status, a rare feat for an actress in her 70s.

We might also note we don’t see much here of Angus Sampson and Whannell himself as Elise’s nerdy sidekicks Tucker and Specs, who will doubtless add a spot of broad comic relief once again.

Still, will this prove ‘the most terrifying chapter’ in the series as the trailer would have us believe? We have our doubts - but we’ll be happy to be proven wrong.

‘Insidious Chapter 3′ opens in UK cinemas on 5 June 2015.
