Insidious Series May Continue Beyond Chapter 3

Leigh Whannell, creator of the ‘Insidious’ series making his directorial debut with the upcoming ‘Insidious Chapter 3,’ says he plans to keep the supernatural horror series going for the foreseeable future - providing the third film is successful enough.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the 38-year old Australian actor and writer-turned-director (pictured above with Lin Shaye in 2011′s original ‘Insidious’) explains that the third film is actually a prequel set in 2008, i.e. three years before the events of the first film - and, as such, further films in the series may bridge that gap.

“This third film really sets up the Insidious universe to go on, if it was successful enough.

“Now you have Elise (Shaye), the central character, as a medium, and she has her two kind of bumbling assistants (Whannell’s Specs and Angus Sampson’s Tucker), and you have all these years between the third film and the first movie: You’ve got 2009, 2010. Great years!

“I can imagine [it] being set up as almost a James Bond-esque franchise where Elise goes into different situations with different families, and is fighting or defeating these different demons.”

Whannell of course knows a thing or two about long-running horror franchises, having broken through in the movies by writing and starring in 2004′s ‘Saw’ - directed by his friend and fellow Australian James Wan.

A low-budget sleeper hit, ‘Saw’ went on to spawn seven sequels ending in 2010′s ‘Saw 3D,’ though neither Wan nor Whannell were involved in the series beyond the first two sequels, on which Whannell had writing credits.

Instead, Whannell and Wan went on to collaborate on ‘Dead Silence’ and the first two ‘Insidious’ movies, before Wan moved on to direct the recent mega-blockbuster ‘Fast & Furious 7.’

Still, despite his ambitious vision for the ‘Insidious’ series, Whannell is not counting his chickens just yet:

“As far as it actually happening? I’m not sure yet. I’m actually quite superstitious about films [before they are] released. I always have been, but that’s gone into overdrive now I’m a director.”

We can certainly think of worse things than a bunch more ‘Insidious’ films. We just hope they keep the energy and sense of fun from the first two films, and aren’t quite as formulaic as the trailer below suggests the third might be…

‘Insidious Chapter 3′ opens in UK cinemas on 5 June.
