He wanted to make the film because of his children.

"I really related to the central dilemma of the character [Cooper, played by Matthew McConuaghey] at the heart of ‘Interstellar’. He’s a father, I’m a father myself, and I found a great emotional connection with the difficulty of his story. He’s forced to choose between leaving his kids behind and going off to save the world."

He cites ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ as an influence on the film.

"I grew up with films, a lot of great blockbusters, that dealt with weighty issues. Like ‘Close Encounters’ which dealt with: if we met alien life, what would it be like?"

In fact, Spielberg’s work is a great inspiration to him.

"[Steven Spielberg] as well as [George] Lucas and various others really did some incredible work when I was a kid, it really stuck in my head."

He’d rather please cinema audiences than the Academy.

"For us, ‘Interstellar’ has always been about an entertaining thrill-ride, so that’s really the focus. It’s getting it out there to the audience and hoping they have some fun with it.

He’d love to go into space…

"But, I don’t think I want to be on the first, or even the second trip. I’d see how it goes first!"

'Interstellar' is in cinemas from this Friday.
