J.K. Rowling has revealed the answer to the riddle which sent her near four million Twitter followers into a Potter-based frenzy.

After mentioning in passing that she was both working on a novel and tweaking a screenplay, her fans went into meltdown, many presuming more Potter material may be on the way.

She toyed with her followers first, saying: “See, now I’m tempted to post a riddle or an anagram. Must resist temptation… must work.”

But temptation got the better of her, posting the puzzler ‘Cry, foe! Run amok! Fa awry! My wand won’t tolerate this nonsense’, and then the message: “Something to ponder while I’m away X.”

Fans deluged her with possible theories – most quite rightly aimed at the forthcoming Harry Potter spin-off ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ ballpark, the movie of which is currently being plotted.

Indeed, Rowling later dropped a hint, saying: “Newt Scamander’s History of New York Fauna: One town, my tale. Warmer.”

Newt Scamander is the fictional ‘magizoologist’ author of the book which features in the Potter novels, himself a graduate of Hogwarts.

Ultimately, it was Emily Strong, a PhD student at Sheffield University who solved the anagram:

Rowling confirmed her as the winner two minutes later, with Strong replying that she had solved the poser the old fashioned way with a pen and paper.

Rowling also confirmed that the answer is also the first line of the synopsis of Scamander’s story.

In which case, it would appear that the film, which producers are said to be eyeing Potter alumnus David Yates for the director’s chair, is taking place in the Big Apple.

Rounding up the nerdy excitement, Rowling added:
