James Gunn Casts Doubt On Guardians Of The Galaxy Avengers Crossover

Although the Avengers seem to be building towards an epic showdown with Thanos, it looks as though we shouldn’t necessarily expect the Guardians of the Galaxy to show up…

It’s likely to be one of the biggest comic book movie events in Marvel’s history – ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ looks likely to set the stage for an all-out battle with the mad Titan, Thanos. But while we all assumed that the Guardians of the Galaxy would play an important role, it looks as though director James Gunn isn’t so sure…

During an interview with Screen Junkies, the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director was asked about the change in tone seen in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and how that might affect the Guardians…

“We really are separate from the Avengers,” he said. “And I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all these. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save.”

Of course, this seems to suggest that the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ won’t be teaming up with the Avengers anytime soon… but with ‘Avengers Infinity War’ still four whole years away, it might just be the case that James Gunn isn’t ready to think about that right now.

“Earth is the Avengers’ province,” he added. “Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s going to happen.”

Obviously, what we’ve seen of the Guardians so far shows that they’re far from perfect… and even Rocket’s best laid plans take a bit of improvisation to come together.  As well as the odd mechanical prosthetic. But does this mean that the Guardians will be bowing out of the fight?

I get the feeling that Drax the Destroyer is in this for the long haul… and if he gets his way, he’ll be squaring off against Thanos with his pals by his side.

Quite how that transpires remains to be seen… and whether or not Drax gets to confront Thanos alongside the might of The Avengers is another matter entirely. But surely Marvel won’t miss out on the chance to crossover these awesome franchises. Will they?

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ heads to cinemas on 4 May 2018 and 3 May 2019.
