James Wan Producing Horror Remake The Entity

Back when ‘Insidious Chapter 2′ came out, director-producer James Wan declared that he was all done with the horror genre, moving on to direct ‘Fast & Furious 7′ - which has promptly become the biggest hit of that action franchise, breaking the $1 billion mark at the box office.

However, while Wan has most definitely broken through to the big leagues, it’s clear he hasn’t put his scary movie days behind him just yet. Firstly, he’s due to direct a sequel to ‘The Conjuring’; and secondly, he will produce a remake of 1982 horror movie ‘The Entity,’ as The Hollywood Reporter have announced.

The remake will reunite Wan with writers Chad and Carey Hayes, who also scripted ‘The Conjuring,’ as well as producer Roy Lee. However, Wan is not expected to direct the film, and no director has been announced yet.

Like ‘The Conjuring,’ the story of ‘The Entity’ is allegedly based on a real-life haunting. Remaking the film seems logical given the continuing trend for ghost movies; however, ‘The Entity’ is rather different, given there is also an unpleasant sexual element to the supernatural phenomena.

The original film from director Sidney J Furie starred Barbara Hershey as a woman who is raped by an unseen demonic presence.

While the bulk of Wan’s horror output Wan has been PG-13 (aside from his strictly R-rated debut, 2004′s ‘Saw’), ‘The Entity’ seems highly unlikely from the premise alone to work at that level. There would seem potential here for this to be one of the darkest, most hard-edged mainstream horror releases for some time - or, if not handled correctly, one of the most distasteful and problematic.

Still, there is no mention yet of which studio might handle the film, although 20th Century Fox distributed the original.

Wan’s next directorial effort, ‘The Conjuring 2: the Enfield Poltergeist’ - which is also written by the Hayes brothers, and will see the return of stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson - is due to start production this autumn.

There is still no confirmation on whether Wan will then go on to direct either ‘Fast & Furious 8′ or ‘Aquaman’ (assuming he winds up doing either).
