Jane Levy has addressed the real reason she didn't return for this year's sequel to Don't Breathe, suggesting that she and original director Fede Álvarez are not on the same page.

The follow-up to the hit 2016 movie, Don't Breathe 2, is scheduled for release later this summer without its lead, but an explanation for Levy's absence was never officially given.

Earlier this week, however, Álvarez – who serves as the sequel's producer this time around – claimed that he "wouldn't have" asked Levy to return for Don't Breathe 2 as he didn't believe she was "truly happy" on the first film's set.

"Jane is amazing; we've made two movies with her and have so much respect for her. I saw her recent work, and I'm so happy that she's having so much success with her TV stuff. I think when I see her there, I see her in her true element where she's truly happy," he said.

"When I saw her shooting this movie, I did not see her happy. I think that she gives 200% every day, and these movies are really demanding in the way we do them also. So I wouldn't have done that to her.

"Maybe when I called her, she would've said yes. I doubt it, but if she had, I would feel really bad. I wouldn't want to do that to anybody."

Levy has since addressed Álvarez's theory, telling fans on Twitter that although the filmmaker was right to say she wouldn't want to do Don't Breathe 2, it's not for the reasons he mentioned.

"[I] don't really want to revisit this but it feels a little funny.. to have people choosing what the "best decision" is for me without asking what i think or want…? @fedalvar right though. i would not want to do don't breathe 2.. but not because i am too committed of an actor lol," she wrote.

Hinting at those pesky 'creative differences', the actress wished the "new cast" of Don't Breathe 2 luck, but not before asking: "Maybe we should be asking why these films are made in such a way that their directors are averse to having committed actors participate?"

While Jane Levy won't be seen in Don't Breathe 2, a former EastEnders star will be, so that's something.

Don't Breathe 2 will be released in cinemas on August 13.
