Jason Reitman To Direct DreamWorks Animation Beekle

Director Jason Reitman will helm a new animation for DreamWorks by the name of ‘Beekle’.

The ‘Labor Day’ and ‘Juno’ director will take charge of an adaptation of Dan Santat’s ‘The Adventures Of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend’, which is about an imaginary friend who looks for a child to befriend.

It’ll require a different approach to a lot of his previous content, including ‘Thank You For Smoking’, which is aimed towards mature cinema goers, with ‘Beekle’ predominantly for a younger audience with its children-friendly tale.

In fact, it was Reitman who stumbled upon the idea of an adaptation when he found the book while shopping one day.

“I was book shopping with my daughter, when a little tooth-shaped character in a paper crown stole our hearts,” he recalls. “His name was Beekle, and I’m honoured to now be adapting Santat’s charming story into a feature film. I’m particularly proud to be working with DreamWorks Animation, makers of ‘Kung Fu Panda’, the first film my daughter ever saw on the big screen.”

With a number of other projects competing for his attention, such as ‘The Possibilities’ and ‘I Would Only Rob Banks For My Family’, it’s currently unknown when we can expect to see this hit cinemas. With it being animation, it’ll likely take a number of years to materialise, but we’re likely to hear a lot more in the coming months once pre-production properly begins.
