Jim Carrey: Tommy Lee Jones Hated Me

There has long been myth and legend of a spat between Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones while on the set of ‘Batman Forever’.

The polar opposite pair shared the screen together on Joel Schumacher’s fluorescent take on Gotham’s dark knight back in 1995, playing The Riddler and Two-Face respectively.

But it seems a combination of events – coupled with Carrey just not being the notoriously grumpy Lee Jones’s cup of tea – conjured up a recipe for hatred.

Speaking on Howard Sterns radio show in the US, Carrey spilled it on the pair’s rocky relationship.

“I was really looking forward to working with Tommy, because he’s a fantastic actor, and he still is to me. He’s amazing,” he said.

“But he was a little crusty. Y’know, sometimes that road scholarship is more of a weapon than an asset.

He was just a little freaked out because ‘Dumb and Dumber’ came out on the same weekend as ‘Cobb’, and ‘Cobb’ was his big swing for the fences, and it didn’t work out. And that freaked him out a bit.”

As a result, the pair’s first meeting didn’t go too well.

“I walked into a restaurant the night before our big scene in the Riddler’s lair, and the maitre d’ said ‘You’re working with Tommy Lee Jones, aren’t you?’ and I said ‘yeah, I am!’, and he says ‘he’s in the back corner having dinner’. So I thought great I’ll go and say hi.

“So I went up to say Hi, and the blood drained from his face, in such a way that I realised that I had become the face of his pain.

“He got up, kind of shaking, and hugged me and said ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you’. I was like ‘Wow, OK. Well, what’s going on, man?’

“And he said ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery’.

“He did not want to work with me at that point. That was a hard one. To go to work the next day was pretty tough.”

Though delivered to a critical shrug, the movie, with Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne, was still a success, with or without Lee Jones’ and Carrey’s on-screen chemistry.

It was the second highest-grossing movie of 1995 in the US, one place behind ‘Toy Story’.
