Joel Kinnaman Wanted For Suicide Squad

It looks as though ‘Suicide Squad’ may have found its Rick Flagg… as Joel Kinnaman is reportedly being pursued to take over from Tom Hardy.

The 35-year old Swedish actor starred in AMC’s ‘The Killing’ and recently turned heads as Alex Murphy in the 2014 ‘Robocop’ reboot. And now it looks as though he could star as the leader of DC’s villainous ‘Suicide Squad’ as it heads to the big screen.

According to The Wrap, Kinnaman has already landed the role of Rick Flagg Jr… or at least, he’s in negotiations for the part.

“Joel Kinnaman will replace Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg in Warner Bros.’ comic book adaptation ‘Suicide Squad’,” they revealed. “Warner Bros. had no comment, while representatives for Kinnaman did not respond to multiple requests for comment.”

“Agency sources tell TheWrap that Kinnaman is in negotiations for the coveted role of Flagg, who is the leader of a group of supervillains known as the Suicide Squad.”

Of course, Kinnaman’s biggest role to date was playing Alex Murphy in the 2014 reboot of the 80s classic, ‘Robocop’. And while the movie certainly didn’t blow us all away, it was a good first foray into sci-fi action… making him a great choice for ‘Suicide Squad’.

But is he the only actor in the running?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s not quite the case…

“Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal are other actors that were being considered for the role, according to sources,” they reveal. “But Kinnaman appears to be the choice at this stage. Insiders caution that any deal being discussed could fall apart.”

Of course, we’ve already seen that happen after Jake Gyllenhaal was tipped for the role… and subsequently passed up the opportunity.

Will Kinnaman end up nabbing the role? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But I can’t help thinking that he’d make a rather good Rick Flagg Jr.

‘Suicide Squad’ heads to cinemas on 5 August 2016.
